5th Season Blood Orange Saison

Brewed: 02/10/2019   Kegged: 02/19/2019

5thSeason.jpgAs you probably know if you follow SheppyBrew Brewery, we brew at least 4 saisons every year.

After brewing my 2019 Arctic Vortex Winter Saison, I harvested some of the 3711 Yeast. I didn't want to wait until Spring to use it. I decided to brew another (5th) saison.

"5th Season" seemed like a good name.

Generally, my seasonal saisons are very straight forward. Malt. Hops. Water. Yeast. Sometimes sugar. The Autumn Saison uses pumpkin, but there are no other flavorings in any of the Seasonal Saisons.

I thought I would start experimenting with my saison recipe with 5th Season. I figure I will do a 6th 7th etc ...

I decided that 5th Season would be a Blood Orange Saison.

Why? Because I can.

It sounded good to me.

Should be good ... right?

02/10/2019 esheppy
Brew day in the garage today.
02/10/2019 esheppy
New day went well. OG a bit low at 1.050, but that is ok. Hoping to see this start up soon.
02/11/2019 esheppy
Active fermentation. 1.040. 71 degrees.
02/12/2019 esheppy
Not as vigorous as yesterday. 1.029. 73.
02/13/2019 esheppy
1.013. 72.
02/15/2019 esheppy
Still really cloudy but gravity is down to 1.006.
02/17/2019 esheppy
Took a sample. Still quite cloudy. Subtle orange flavor comes across a little tart. 1.005
02/18/2019 esheppy
1.004. Putting into cold garage to cool for gelatin.
02/19/2019 esheppy
Kegging. Added gelatin, but didn't allow time for it to take effect. Tilt measures 1.000.
02/22/2019 esheppy
Rocked some CO2 into keg.
02/23/2019 esheppy
First pint. Orange comes through more than I thought when kegging. Needs more carbonation.
02/24/2019 esheppy
Shook some more co2 into the keg.
03/15/2019 esheppy
