As you may know from my blog, Gnasty the Gnome has become a SheppyBrew Brewing assistant and drinking buddy. He is also a Christmas gift designed to help me get over my irrational fear of gnomes. Plus, he is a Chicago BlackHawks fan.

As Gnasty and I have become beer-buddies, we decided to collaborate on a beer recipe. It turns out that Gnomes love English Pale Ales ... especially ESB's and the fact that I had to brew one seemed like reason enough to make this the beer we worked on together.

Got ingredients today. Brewing Sunday.

Making a 1.5 liter (6 cup) starter with a cup and a half of DME. This is less than suggested by the pitching calculator in Beer Smith, but better than nothing I guess. I need a bigger container for my starters.

Brewed today. Only got 5 gallons at 1.056. Things went pretty well, though. Temp at 64.
07/03/2013 esheppy
Temps consistent at 64 until today. Was at 66 this morning. Letting finish off where it wants to.

Took a gravity reading. 1.013, which is right where the expected FG is. That makes this a 5.8% ABV beer. Tastes good. Seems about the right about of bitterness. Could be a little more hoppy, but I think the dry-hop will take care of that. Very very clear.

Kegged today along with 1.5oz EKG dry hop. Also harvested 4 mason jars of the yeast. FG is about 1.012, which makes this a 5.8% beer. Again, the hop flavor could be greater. The clarity was great. Might be a little dry for an ESB, but I'm ok with that.

Took the dry-hops out today. Note that the keg was in the keggerator for most of the dry-hop time. The keg apparently does not seal on the piece of dental floss I had strung out of the top. Re-pressurized to 30 psi for a bit and will be going to 12ish psi in the keggerator after I defrost it.

Had a little sample. Nice rich caramel with (maybe) a hint of chocolate. Finishes with nice bitterness. Nice ekg hop flavor, although could probably use more. Nice beer.

A couple days ago, took a growler up to share with a couple of friends in Breck. Everybody loved it. Also shared some fine LTB growlers, and Gnasty ESB was the favorite.

Keg is dead. Didn't realize it was close to being empty.

I think I'm going to brew this again after I finish my Style Categories. Next time, I am going to try to lighten up the color.
